Cinematography

insidious

cinematography is important in a thriller film because it builds a relationship with the audience and enables the audience to see facial expressions clearly, which can create the atmosphere for the thriller movie. it can also tell the audience how the charachters are feeling and how they are reacting to what is happening within the movie. Also camera shots build an atmosphere throughout the movie, allowing the audience to feel involved as much as possible.

In the thriller film insidous some of the main shots which were used was a 'mid shot'. This was used a lot throughout  the movie because it shows the background and half their bodies in the shot. This enables the audience to see how the charachter is reacting to what is happening. in this particular mid shot i have used, it shows the mother and father holding onto their child. this shows distress and concern for thier child this creates an atmosphere of suspense for the audience. this is typical for thriller films to include because it is a common convention.

Another shot is the close up this mainly focuses on the facial expressions and main background. The close up looks directly at the facial expression which shows panic and horror on the faces which shows that this is a thriller. this effect creates an uneasy atmosphere for the audience.

The final shot that i looked at in insidious was a panning shot this shot scanned around the room as in from the point of view of the mother looking for something in her sons bedroom. this creates suspense within the audience as they could be waiting for something to jump out into the bedroom. this is something that the audience would expect to see in a thriller because it leaves on the edge of your seat.

i have found out that using appropriate camera shots in a thriller film has helped me to understand how i can interpret these into my own thriller films by seeing how the different camera shots can create a suspense and an atmosphere.

  1. Your analysis of camera shots shows a basic understanding of how the micro element is used in thriller films. You have identified the correct and you have made a start in explaining the purpose but you need to expand on the examples in more detail.

Also you need to ensure that you discuss the role of the conventions of a thriller film in more detail and aim to relate your points back, to show further understanding of why it is used.

Finally aim to include still images/video links to support the points that you are making. Also you need to correct your grammar
